The name of the troop ship was the USNS GEN DANIEL I. SULTAN. We circled that night, and the chaplain was saying "Private xxxxxxx it is OK to report to sick bay", but Pvt xxxxxx was gone. This is how I remember the first death in our brigade.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe troop ship USNS GEN DANIEL I SULTAN transported a number of US forces to Vietnam, including much of the 199th Infantry Brigade. On 25 Nov 1966 Private Gardner was last seen at 1730 hours, and was reported missing at following an 1800 muster. Although a "man overboard" search was initiated at once and continued through the night Gardner was not found. He was presumed dead, body not recoverable. The 199th Infantry Brigade lost 746 men in Vietnam - and one before it even arrived. |
