REMEMBERED

In May, he kept me from getting my head blown off by an AK-47 during an ambush.

In July, he died in the assault on Hill 996.

Remember the ambush? If I remember correctly we had 5 men down and one wacked out Slack Man. You kept me from doing somthing foolish that day. Rapp and I got one man back to that bomb crater that we used as an LZ, and got him on a medevac. I came running back from the LZ and dove down next to you. I was out of breath and you said, "Damn, Doc, you have your ruck on". You said, "Ground it". I got almost to my feet, to catch up to the squad and you reached up and pulled me down hard just as an AK-47 opened up again. All I could think of was they still see me, they are following me. You told me to stay put until we got some good suppresive fire.

By then things were too screwed up and I couldn't unscrew it. I never thanked you for that, Mike. I never thought about again when I had the chance to tell you.

I'm glad that you were thinking clearly. I was too pumped, confused and getting stupid. You weren't, though, you had it all wired together. That was a hell of a day, wasn't it?

To say thanks doesn't seem to be enough considering, but this is all I can do now.

Thanks Mike. Thanks for being there at that moment.

Doc
