A Note from The Virtual WallOn 19 Nov 1968 elements of the 2nd Bn, 28th Infantry were inserted into a landing zone about 3 kilometers west of Ben Het to build a new Fire Supprt Base - FSB CANTIGNY. The first order of business was to clear the area around the FSB area. While doing so, 2nd Plt, D Company 2/28 encountered VC in bunkers in a treeline. The point man, SP4 David C. Jasper of New Castle, Indiana, was hit by the initial volley of VC fire; a second soldier, SP5 Albert M. Figueroa of San Antonio, Texas, was killed trying to retrieve SP4 Jasper. Eventually the VC were cleared and the troops turned to constructing the new fire support base.What happened next is reported in the MACV Summary for 20 Nov:
Although the Summary puts CANTIGNY east rather than west of Ben Cat, the remainder is accurate enough. The VC attack began with mortars and a ground attack followed. Five US soldiers were killed in the attack:
