THE MEMORIALS I have worn Lieutenant Colonel Robert Carl Wistrand's POW/MIA bracelet since the mid-70's. I would like to give his bracelet to his family, and I have tried to locate them to no avail. I hope this doesn't seem insignificant, because I can't describe what seeing his name on the Wall a few years ago did to me. Ever since then, I've wanted to do this. I guess I want his family to know there was someone else out there who cared and thought about him for many years ... Sharon Wilson swilson@genesys.org 16 Jul 2001 THE MISSION On May 9, 1965, Captain Robert C. Wistrand was assigned a mission which would take him through the Mu Gia Pass on the border between Laos and North Vietnam. He was flying an F-105D Thunderchief, an aircraft which flew more missions against North Vietnam than any other U.S. aircraft. It also suffered more losses than any other aircraft type. During the mission, Wistrand's aircraft crashed. Wingmen observed no parachute and heard no emergency radio beeper signals. Searches of the loss area were fruitless. There remained the possibility, however, that Wistrand had successfully ejected and he was classified Missing in Action. Robert C. Wistrand was promoted to the rank of Colonel during the period he was maintained as missing in action. His remains have not been repatriated.
